27. Saying No

Hi there!

Next week we are going to focus on how to express negative ideas more naturally and efficiently in English, especially by using “no” and “none”.

The video is labelled B1, but don’t be fooled by that! The difficulties learners have with negative sentences at B1 and B2 are often very similar, and using structures like “no” and “none” correctly is an important step towards speaking more fluently and naturally.

Have a great weekend!

26. Advice

Hi there!

Have you ever received a piece of advice that stayed with you for years? And do you think listening carefully can improve our relationships?

Next week we will talk about advice, communication and listening skills. We will reflect on the kind of advice that helps us in life and on what it really means to be a good listener.

To introduce the topic and revise useful vocabulary related to personal experiences, communication and relationships, please watch these two videos:

25. Technology

Hi there!

Have you ever tried to use your smartphone while wearing gloves in winter? It can be frustrating… but what if there was a strange (and slightly funny) solution?

In this video, mathematician Hannah Fry explains why it is actually possible to use a smartphone with something as unexpected as a sausage.

Behind the humour, the video introduces an important concept: how touchscreens work and why some materials can interact with them while others cannot.

Watch the video and see if you can understand the science behind this unusual experiment.

Happy Easter holidays!

24. Media

Dear conversationalists,

How has social media changed the way TV shows are created and shared? Is it still necessary to work with big studios and traditional media companies?

In this video from the British Council, we explore how a low-budget series called All about the McKenzies was created for YouTube and became successful thanks to social media:

The video shows how platforms like Facebook and Twitter help creators share their work, connect with audiences, and build a career in today’s digital world.
